Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to enable students to understand the concept of smart cities, related technologies, and their effects on the real estate sector.

Course Content

The course covers smart city components, data use, GIS, smart mobility, smart environment, smart energy, smart buildings, disaster management, digital municipal services, artificial intelligence, IoT, data security, and effects on real estate value.

Weekly Detailed Course Contents
Week 1 - Theoretical
Introduction to Smart Cities: The concept of smart cities and the relationship between urbanization, technology, data, and sustainable urban management are explained.
Week 2 - Theoretical
Main Components of Smart Cities: Smart mobility, smart environment, smart energy, smart governance, smart living, and smart economy components are discussed.
Week 3 - Theoretical
Use of Data in Urban Management: Big data, open data, sensor data, location data, municipal data, and decision-support systems are introduced.
Week 4 - Theoretical
Geographic Information Systems and Smart Cities: Map-based urban management, urban information systems, parcel data, zoning information, and the role of spatial analysis in smart cities are explained.
Week 5 - Theoretical
Smart Transportation Systems: Traffic management, public transportation, parking systems, pedestrian and bicycle mobility, electric vehicles, and the effects of transportation data on urban life are discussed.
Week 6 - Theoretical
Smart Environment and Sustainability: Air quality monitoring, waste management, water management, green spaces, energy efficiency, and environmental sustainability practices are explained.
Week 7 - Practice
Smart City Application Review: Students are asked to examine a smart city application at the municipal, neighborhood, or city scale and evaluate its basic impacts.
Week 8 - Theoretical
Smart Buildings and Housing Technologies: Smart home systems, energy management, security systems, building automation, residential complex management, and housing comfort are discussed.
Week 9 - Theoretical
Disaster and Risk Management in Smart Cities: Early warning systems, risk maps, and urban resilience against earthquakes, floods, fires, landslides, and other disasters are explained.
Week 10 - Theoretical
Digital Municipal Services and Smart Governance: E-municipality, e-government, online application systems, citizen participation, transparency, and digital public services are discussed.
Week 11 - Theoretical
Artificial Intelligence and the Internet of Things: Artificial intelligence, IoT sensors, automatic data collection, prediction systems, and smart decision-support applications in urban management are introduced.
Week 12 - Theoretical
Smart Cities and the Real Estate Sector: The effects of smart transportation, environmental quality, security, digital infrastructure, smart building features, and urban services on real estate value are examined.
Week 13 - Theoretical
Ethics, Security, and Privacy in Smart Cities: Personal data protection, surveillance risks, data security, digital inequality, algorithmic decisions, and ethical responsibilities are discussed.
Week 14 - Theoretical
General Review and Practical Smart City Project: The semester topics are reviewed; students are asked to develop a smart city application proposal for a sample neighborhood or city.
