Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to provide students with basic concepts of home patient care, the roles and responsibilities of home care technicians, and fundamental care practices. The course also aims to enable students to assess the needs of care recipients with a holistic approach, ensure a safe care environment, and explain basic patient care practices.

Course Content

The course covers basic concepts of home patient care, roles and responsibilities of home care technicians, basic needs of care recipients, holistic care approach, health assessment, environmental safety, self-care practices, positioning, bed-making, vital signs, infection control, nutrition, elderly care, pain management, wound care, medication administration, and blood product transfusion.

4.Explains the principles of safe environment, infection control, asepsis-antisepsis, and patient safety in home patient care.
5.Explains the basic care principles related to positioning, bed-making, skin and self-care, oral care, pain management, wound care, and pressure injury care.
6.Explains the basic care and safety principles related to older adult care, medication administration, blood and blood product transfusion, and oral/gavage feeding.

Weekly Detailed Course Contents
Week 1 - Theoretical & Practice
Theoretical: The home care profession, the roles and responsibilities of the home care technician, definitions related to home care, and basic rules for conducting home care practices. Laboratory: Introduction to the laboratory environment, patient safety, hand hygiene, use of personal protective equipment, and preparation for basic care practices.
Week 2 - Theoretical & Practice
Theoretical: Basic needs of patients receiving home care and a holistic approach. Laboratory: Case study evaluation to determine patient needs, identifying care needs, and preparation for the documentation process.
Week 3 - Theoretical & Practice
Theoretical: Assessment of systems and health; an introduction to the care planning process, data collection, determining care needs, and the basic steps of care planning. General patient assessment steps, observation, data collection, documentation practices, and preparation for identifying care needs through a sample case.
Week 4 - Theoretical & Practice
Theoretical: Physical environmental safety and risks in home patient care. Laboratory: Creating a safe care environment, assessing the risk of falls, arranging the environment, and patient safety practices.
Week 5 - Theoretical & Practice
Theoretical: Skin and personal care practices; meeting the care needs of the skin and its appendages, feet, hair, mouth, and the entire body. Laboratory: Skill practice focused on bed baths, oral care, hair care, hand and foot care, and personal care practices.
Week 6 - Theoretical & Practice
Theoretical: positions given to patients, bed-making techniques, movement requirements, and practical applications. Laboratory: bed-making, positioning, and practical exercises in moving patients in accordance with body mechanics.
Week 7 - Theoretical & Practice
Theoretical: Patient positioning, bed-making techniques, mobility requirements, and practical applications. Laboratory: Patient transfer, in-bed mobility, positioning to prevent pressure ulcers, and safe mobilization techniques.
Week 8 - Theoretical & Practice
Theoretical: Measuring and recording vital signs / Midterm exam. Laboratory: Measuring and recording vital signs, and relating the findings to the basic care process.
Week 9 - Theoretical & Practice
Theoretical: Infection control and practices; rules for providing care in accordance with asepsis, antisepsis, and aseptic techniques. Laboratory: Hands-on exercises on hand hygiene, aseptic techniques, glove use, personal protective equipment, and isolation measures.
Week 10 - Theoretical & Practice
Theoretical: Meeting nutritional needs; oral feeding and tube feeding. Laboratory: Assisting with oral feeding, feeding safety, demonstration of the tube feeding process, and key principles to follow during care.
Week 11 - Theoretical & Practice
Theoretical: Aging and the care of older adults. Laboratory: Practical examples addressing safe care for older adults, support for activities of daily living, mobilization, and communication needs. Explanation of the preparation and implementation criteria for the laboratory practical assessment of basic nursing skills.
Week 12 - Theoretical & Practice
Theoretical: Pain and pain management techniques and patient care. Laboratory: Use of pain assessment scales, positioning for comfort, and review of basic care techniques. Conducting laboratory practical evaluations using the group/rotation method.
Week 13 - Theoretical & Practice
Theoretical: Maintaining tissue integrity, pressure ulcers, and wound care. Laboratory: Pressure ulcer risk assessment, maintaining skin integrity, repositioning, and an introduction to basic wound care supplies. Conducting the laboratory practical assessment using a group/rotation method.
Week 14 - Theoretical & Practice
Theoretical: Oral and parenteral drug administration; blood and blood product transfusions. Laboratory: Demonstration of basic safety principles related to drug administration safety, principles of proper medication administration, parenteral administration, and the blood transfusion process. Completion of the laboratory skills assessment using a group/rotation method.
