Objectives of the Course

The aim of the course is to provide students with basic knowledge and skills related to preoperative and postoperative patient care in surgical diseases. The course also aims to help students explain care needs for surgical diseases in different body systems, learn home care principles for patients with invasive procedures, and recognize care practices related to caregiver education, dialysis, emergency home care, and common hematological and oncological diseases in children.

Course Content

The aim of the course is to provide students with basic knowledge and skills related to preoperative and postoperative patient care in surgical diseases. The course also aims to enable students to explain care needs in surgical diseases of different body systems, learn home care principles for patients with invasive procedures, and recognize care practices related to caregiver education, dialysis, emergency home care, and common hematological and oncological diseases in children.

1.Evaluates the care needs of individuals with surgical diseases and plans appropriate care interventions.
2.Explains and performs basic care practices for diseases related to endocrine, gastrointestinal, urogenital, nervous, respiratory, and cardiovascular system surgery.
3.Plans and performs home care practices for individuals with invasive interventions, those undergoing dialysis, and those with special care needs.
4.Identifies situations at home that require emergency care; applies the steps for basic life support and resuscitation in accordance with patient safety principles.
5.Demonstrates a holistic care approach by considering the physical, psychological, and educational needs of the patient and family caregiver.

Weekly Detailed Course Contents
Week 1 - Theoretical & Practice
Pre- and post-operative patient care. Clinical practice orientation session; explanation of practice settings, attendance requirements, student responsibilities, practice guidelines, patient safety, professional ethics, record-keeping, care plan development, and evaluation criteria for practice.
Week 2 - Theoretical & Practice
Surgical diseases and care of the endocrine system. The start of the clinical rotation; students conduct activities such as observation, identifying care needs, participating in basic care procedures, maintaining records, and evaluating cases, in accordance with the patient profile at the clinical site.
Week 3 - Theoretical & Practice
Digestive system surgery, diseases, and care
Week 4 - Theoretical & Practice
Uro-Genital system surgical diseases and care
Week 5 - Theoretical & Practice
Nervous system surgery diseases and care
Week 6 - Theoretical & Practice
Respiratory surgery diseases and care
Week 7 - Theoretical & Practice
Cardiovascular surgery diseases and care
Week 8 - Theoretical & Practice
Cardiovascular surgery diseases and care/Midterm exam
Week 9 - Theoretical & Practice
Common hematological and oncological diseases in children and their Care
Week 10 - Theoretical & Practice
Eye, ear, nose, throat surgical diseases and care
Week 11 - Theoretical & Practice
Being a family member of a patient and providing education to family members; assessing the educational needs of patients and their family members.
Week 12 - Theoretical & Practice
Home care practices for patients with invasive interventions
Week 13 - Theoretical & Practice
Dialysis and home care.
Week 14 - Theoretical & Practice
Emergency care management at home; recognizing emergencies at home, patient safety, initiating the 112/emergency response process, and the steps for performing basic life support and resuscitation. The clinical practice process is evaluated and completed in accordance with the practice evaluation form.
