Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to provide students with basic care practices for bedridden patients, individuals requiring mobilization, and patients with different system-related health problems. The course also aims to enable students to explain care needs related to respiratory, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, neurological, and urinary system problems, and to learn basic care principles for diabetic foot, sleep problems, and terminal care.

Course Content

The course covers patient mobilization, care of bedridden patients, fall prevention, care in fluid-electrolyte imbalances, respiratory care practices, gastrointestinal system care, musculoskeletal diseases, dermatological problems, cardiovascular system problems, diabetic foot care, care in neurological diseases, urinary system care practices, sleep problems, and terminal patient care.

1.Determines the individual’s basic care needs based on assessment findings.
2.Describes basic care interventions for respiratory, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, urinary, neurological, and dermatological problems.
3.Implements care practices for commonly encountered clinical conditions in accordance with patient safety and aseptic principles.
4.Plans and implements appropriate care for patients with diabetic foot, stoma, urinary catheterization, and terminal care needs.
5.Provides holistic care by considering the patient’s physical, psychological, and social needs.

Weekly Detailed Course Contents
Week 1 - Theoretical & Practice
Theoretical: Ensuring patient mobilization, care for bedridden patients, fall prevention, assessment of care needs, and principles of safe care. Clinical Practice: Clinical practice orientation session; explanation of practice settings, attendance requirements, student responsibilities, practice guidelines, patient safety, professional ethics, record-keeping, care plan development, and evaluation criteria for the practice.
Week 2 - Theoretical & Practice
Theoretical: Care practices for fluid and electrolyte imbalances. During the clinical practice process, students, under the supervision of a faculty member or clinical instructor and in accordance with the patient profile of the practice setting, carry out activities such as observation, assessing care needs, participating in basic care procedures, maintaining records, and evaluating cases
Week 3 - Theoretical & Practice
Respiratory care procedures; breathing and coughing exercises, oxygen therapy and suctioning, tracheostomy care, and principles of safe and aseptic care
Week 4 - Theoretical & Practice
Care applications for the gastrointestinal system (Constipation and Diarrhea care practices, Stoma patient care)
Week 5 - Theoretical & Practice
Care practices in skeletal system diseases
Week 6 - Theoretical & Practice
Practices for dermatological problems
Week 7 - Theoretical & Practice
Cardiovascular System Problems and Care Practices
Week 8 - Theoretical & Practice
Cardiovascular System Problems and Care Practices/Midterm Exam
Week 9 - Theoretical & Practice
Preventive and Care Measures for Diabetic Foot Ulcers
Week 10 - Theoretical & Practice
Care Practices for Neurological Disorders
Week 11 - Theoretical & Practice
Urinary system care practices; permanent and temporary bladder catheterization, monitoring of fluid intake and output, and infection control principles
Week 12 - Theoretical & Practice
Urinary system care practices include bladder training, pelvic floor muscle exercises, self-care for urinary incontinence, and care practices for urinary tract infections.
Week 13 - Theoretical & Practice
Care Practices for Sleep and Sleep Problems
Week 14 - Theoretical & Practice
End-of-life care; a holistic care approach tailored to the physical, psychological, and social needs of the patient and their family. The clinical practice process is evaluated and completed in accordance with the practice evaluation form.
