Objectives of the Course

To gain qualification by teaching basic thermodynamic concepts, thermodynamic laws, power, efficiency expressions, heat and work relations and physical foundations and applications of energy conversions.

Course Content

Basic concepts of thermodynamics, temperature and pressure measurement, zeroth law of thermodynamics, pure matter and phase changes, perfect gas equation, heat and work relations, first law analysis of closed systems and control volumes, second law of thermodynamics and entropy.

Week 1 - Theoretical
Introduction and Basic Concepts: Thermodynamics and energy, dimensions and importance of units
Week 2 - Theoretical
Systems and control volumes, state changes and cycles, zeroth law of thermodynamics, pressure
Week 3 - Theoretical
Energy Conversions and General Energy Analysis: Forms of energy, energy transfer through heat and work, mechanical energy, first law of thermodynamics and energy conversion efficiencies
Week 4 - Theoretical
Properties of Pure Substances: Pure substances, phase change processes of pure substances, property diagrams for phase change processes, property tables and problem solving
Week 5 - Theoretical
Ideal gas equations of state, compressibility factor
Week 6 - Theoretical
Energy Analysis of Closed Systems: Moving boundary work, energy balance for closed systems
Week 7 - Theoretical
Specific heats, internal energy, enthalpy and specific heats of ideal gases, solids and liquids
Week 8 - Theoretical
Mass and Energy Solutions for Control Volumes: Principle of conservation of mass, work of flow and energy of fluid (MIDTERM)
Week 9 - Theoretical
Energy analysis in continuous flow through control volumes and time-varying control volumes systems
Week 10 - Theoretical
The Second Law of Thermodynamics: Heat and energy stores, heat machines, refrigeration machines and heat pumps
Week 11 - Theoretical
Reversible and irreversible changes of state, Carnot principles, thermodynamic temperature scale, Carnot machines (heating and cooling machines)
Week 12 - Theoretical
Entropy: The principle of increasing entropy, entropy change of pure substances, isentropic state changes
Week 13 - Theoretical
Tds relations, entropy change of liquids and solids-ideal gases
Week 14 - Theoretical
Isentropic efficiency and entropy balance of continuous flow machines
