Objectives of the Course

The main objective of the Internal Combustion Engines course is to provide students with a complete understanding of the thermodynamic foundations, operating principles, structural elements, and subsystems of systems (gasoline and diesel engines) that convert the chemical energy of fuel into mechanical energy.

Course Content

The Internal Combustion Engines course examines the fundamentals, operating principles, and subsystems of thermal engines that convert chemical energy (fuel) into mechanical energy.

Learning Outcomes
1.It can analyze ideal (Otto, Diesel, Combined) and real cycles of internal combustion engines using thermodynamic principles and calculate the effects of engine parameters on efficiency.
2.It identifies the main mechanical parts of an engine (piston, crankshaft, valves, etc.) and its auxiliary subsystems (fuel, ignition, lubrication, cooling), and explains their operating principles and their relationships with each other.
3.Using engine test data, it calculates performance criteria such as torque, power, effective pressure, and specific fuel consumption, and interprets engine characteristic curves.
4.This course explains the combustion mechanisms, mixture formation, and the causes and prevention methods of irregular combustion events such as knocking (detonation) in different engine types (CA and SA).
5.It explains the mechanisms of exhaust gas emission (CO, HC, NOx, PM) formation and evaluates emission control systems (catalytic converter, DPF, EGR, etc.) used to comply with current environmental standards.
