Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to provide students with the principles of agricultural ecology and ecosystem functioning; to introduce ecological factors (climate, soil, water, light, living organisms) encountered in agricultural areas and to enable them to analyze the effects of these factors on crop and animal production. Furthermore, by revealing the differences between natural ecosystems and agro-ecosystems, the course aims to develop awareness of sustainable agriculture and environmental protection.

Course Content

The course covers: definition and history of agriculture and classification of crop production; world nutrition balance and population issues; basic ecological concepts (habitat, niche, competition); population and community ecology, succession; ecosystem components (abiotic and biotic factors); energy flow and food chains; biogeochemical cycles (carbon, water, nitrogen, phosphorus, oxygen); comparison of natural ecosystems with agro-ecosystems; climatic factors (temperature, light, water, humidity, precipitation, wind); soil factors (texture, structure, pH, salinity, water table); and ecological requirements and site selection for horticultural crops and animal production.

1.Defines and explains basic concepts of agricultural ecology (habitat, niche, population, community, ecosystem).
2.Analyzes abiotic (climate, soil, water, light) and biotic (producers, consumers, decomposers) environmental factors and evaluates their effects on agricultural production.
3.Interprets population growth, carrying capacity, competition and succession processes in terms of ecosystem dynamics.
4.Compares natural ecosystems with agricultural ecosystems and develops suggestions for sustainable management of agro-ecosystems.
5.Explains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, water and oxygen cycles in the context of agricultural production and environmental relations.
6.Analyzes site selection, land evaluation and ecological requirements of horticultural crops and animal production systems, and develops sustainable production planning.

Introduction to Agricultural Ecology: Definition of agriculture, history, classification of crop production
Week 2 - Theoretical
World nutrition balance, population growth, malnutrition, essential amino acids

Basic ecological concepts: Habitat, ecological niche, competition, species, population, community
Week 4 - Theoretical
Population ecology: Distribution, density, growth models (exponential, logistic), carrying capacity
Week 5 - Theoretical
Community ecology and succession: Primary and secondary succession, climax vegetation, ecotone
Week 6 - Theoretical
Ecosystem concept and components: Abiotic (light, temperature, water, soil, pH) and biotic (producers, consumers, decomposers) factors

Energy flow and food chains/pyramids; symbiotic relationships (commensalism, mutualism, parasitism)
