The aim of this course is to provide students with the fundamental principles of plant systematics, taxonomic categories, and rules of plant classification and nomenclature (binomial nomenclature). Throughout the course, general characteristics of plant divisions from algae to angiosperms, important families within Gymnospermae and Angiospermae, and distinguishing features of monocots and dicots will be covered, aiming for students to gain competency in recognizing, classifying, and evaluating the economic/ecological importance of plants.
Systematic botany and taxonomy; taxonomic categories; species concepts; classification methods; binomial nomenclature and Latin rules; algae (Cyanophyta, Chlorophyta, Chrysophyta, Rhodophyta, Phaeophyta), bryophytes, ferns; gymnosperms (Cycadopsida, Coniferopsida, Gnetopsida) and families (Pinaceae, Cupressaceae, Taxaceae); angiosperms: monocots (Liliopsida) and dicots (Magnoliopsida) with economically important families are covered.
| 1. | Explains the concepts of taxonomy and systematics, taxonomic categories (kingdom to species), and species concepts (morphological, nominalistic, biological) |
| 2. | Applies the binomial nomenclature system, Latin naming rules, and epithet formation types (color, odor, geography, personal names) |
| 3. | Compares the main divisions of the plant kingdom (Algae, Bryophyta, Pteridophyta, Gymnospermae, Angiospermae) and their general characteristics |
| 4. | Classifies important families of Gymnospermae (Pinaceae, Cupressaceae, Taxaceae etc.) and the distinguishing characteristics of monocots (Liliopsida) and dicots (Magnoliopsida) within Angiosperms |
| 5. | Recognizes major families, genera, and species, and evaluates their economic, medicinal, ecological, and agricultural importance |
