The aim of this course is to provide students with the ability to recognize fungal, bacterial and viral disease agents in major field crops (wheat, barley, lentil, groundnut, rice, sunflower, potato, cotton, tobacco), understand their biology, and develop cultural, biological, chemical and integrated control strategies
The course covers: classification of field crops; wheat/barley root rots, rusts, powdery mildew, bacterial and viral diseases, bunt and smut; lentil anthracnose, wilt, downy mildew and rust; groundnut Sclerotium, Aspergillus (aflatoxin), Cercospora leaf spot; rice blast; sunflower downy mildew, rust and Sclerotinia; potato wart, scab, early blight, black scurf and late blight; cotton damping-off, Verticillium wilt and Alternaria leaf spot; tobacco downy mildew, TMV and bacterial wilt; fungal classification and life cycles; cultural, biological, chemical and integrated control methods.
| 1. | Classifies field crops and explains their importance in Turkish agriculture and the main problems encountered |
| 2. | Identifies the causal agents, symptoms and biology of fungal, bacterial and viral diseases in major field crops such as wheat, barley, lentil, groundnut, rice, sunflower, potato, cotton and tobacco. |
| 3. | Analyzes the life cycles of field crop pathogens (disease cycle, sexual/asexual reproduction, spore types, inoculum sources) and evaluates ecological factors (temperature, humidity, soil, host) affecting disease development. |
| 4. | Distinguishes field crop pathogens using fungal classification (Protozoa, Chromista, Fungi; Oomycota, Ascomycota, Basidiomycota) and basic morphological/physiological characteristics. |
| 5. | Compares cultural, biological, chemical and physical control methods against field crop diseases and evaluates their advantages and limitations |
| 6. | Develops integrated management strategies (crop rotation, resistant varieties, seed treatment, biological agents, fungicide applications, hygiene) for field crop diseases and plans them on a crop-specific basis |
