Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to teach students the fundamental concepts of ecology, ecosystem structure, biogeochemical cycles, population and community ecology; to enable them to comprehend the effects of abiotic and biotic factors on insects; and to equip them with the ability to apply insect epidemiology and r/K strategy-based integrated pest management (IPM) methods to agricultural production problems.

Course Content

Definition of ecology, base theories and concepts, subject and subdivision of ecology, autoecology, abiotic and biotic factors.

Name of Lecturer(s)
Learning Outcomes
1.Explain the ecological hierarchy (biosphere › biome › ecosystem › community › population › organism), ecosystem components, and biogeochemical cycles (carbon, water, nitrogen, phosphorus, oxygen, sulfur).
2.Interpret population dynamics (growth models, carrying capacity, life tables), community structure, and ecological succession processes.
3.Evaluate the effects of abiotic factors (temperature, light, humidity, wind, soil, pH) on insect development, reproduction, distribution, diapause, and behaviour; perform thermal constant (degree-day) calculations.
4.Analyze biotic factors (nutrition, natural enemies, intraspecific and interspecific competition, mutualism), insect–plant relationships, and migration phenomena.
5.Apply the fundamental principles of insect epidemiology, outbreak curve stages, and r/K strategy-based ecological management methods (IPM) to agricultural and forestry problems.
