Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to enable students to comprehend the fundamental concepts and dimensions of sustainable agriculture; to teach integrated pest management and good agricultural practices systems; to provide the ability to comparatively evaluate sustainable agriculture models; to teach soil, water, and natural pest management techniques in a practical manner; and to equip students with the competence to adapt sustainable marketing and certification processes to agricultural production.

Course Content

Definition of sustainable agriculture, its economic–environmental–social dimensions, and global agricultural challenges; Integrated Pest Management (IPM), Integrated Crop Management (ICM), and Good Agricultural Practices (GAP); organic, biodynamic, natural farming, permaculture, and precision agriculture models; sustainable soil and water management, organic fertilisation, and erosion control; natural pest and disease management and crop rotation; marketing of sustainable agricultural products and certification processes.

Learning Outcomes
1.Explain the definition, historical development, and three fundamental dimensions (economic, environmental, social) of sustainable agriculture.
2.Soil and its properties, formation, soil organic matter, soil fertility, soil tillage.
3.Distinguish sustainable agriculture models such as organic farming, biodynamic farming, natural farming, permaculture, and precision agriculture, and evaluate the fundamental principles of each.
4.Explain sustainable soil and water management techniques (green manuring, compost, erosion control, drip irrigation); list natural pest and disease management methods (crop rotation, companion planting, natural pesticides, physical methods).
5.Interpret the future of sustainable agriculture within the framework of marketing sustainable agricultural products, certification processes (organic certification, fair trade), and agricultural policies in Turkey.
