Objectives of the Course

The primary objective of the Macroeconomics course is to provide students with a comprehensive introduction to macroeconomic dynamics and the market economy, thereby developing their ability to independently analyze various economic policies and approaches. In line with the course’s learning outcomes and those of the Banking and Insurance Program, the goal is for students to be able to evaluate national income calculation methods, sustainable economic growth, types of unemployment, and credit market equilibria using an analytical approach. In this way, the course aims to prepare students to become well-equipped individuals who can question the fundamental drivers of social and national welfare, interpret financial problems and risks, and effectively communicate the up-to-date economic knowledge they have acquired in their professional lives.

Course Content

This course begins with the definition and measurement of basic macroeconomic indicators and methods for calculating Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and provides a comprehensive examination of the comparison between nominal and real values. The course content examines global indicators such as purchasing power parity and the Big Mac Index in the process of measuring per capita income, and analyzes productivity and total production functions. In addition to theories of economic growth, development, and sustainable growth, fundamental factors determining the level of well-being—such as geography, culture, and institutional factors—are discussed in depth. Furthermore, the course covers the evaluation of the labor force profile based on TÜİK data, the measurement of unemployment, equilibrium in the labor market, types of wage rigidity, and the concepts of natural and cyclical unemployment. In the final sections of the course, the supply and demand balance in the credit market is examined; fundamental monetary dynamics—such as the functions of money, money supply, velocity of circulation, and the quantity theory of money—are presented in a comprehensive manner, accompanied by case studies and economic approaches.
