The aim of this course is to teach students about Turkey’s natural, historical and cultural tourism assets, organised by geographical region. The objective is for students to understand the tourist attractions, alternative forms of tourism and the relationship between tourism and geography in Turkey’s seven geographical regions, enabling them to evaluate these destinations from a sectoral and professional perspective.
The course begins by examining the fundamental concepts of tourism geography and the impact of Turkey’s geopolitical position on tourism. It then goes on to examine in detail the natural beauty, ancient cities, places of worship and cultural fabric of the Marmara, Aegean, Mediterranean, Central Anatolia, Black Sea, Eastern Anatolia and South-Eastern Anatolia regions, in that order. In the following weeks, the course covers not only coastal tourism but also alternative forms of tourism such as thermal, winter, highland, gastronomic and eco-tourism, as well as Turkey’s national parks and approaches to sustainable tourism.
| 1. | To be able to define the fundamental concepts of tourism geography and the geographical, climatic and geological factors that determine Turkey’s tourism potential. |
| 2. | To be able to distinguish and classify the main natural, historical, archaeological and cultural tourism assets located in Turkey’s seven geographical regions. |
| 3. | To interpret the distribution and potential of alternative forms of tourism in Turkey—such as health (thermal), winter, highland, faith-based and gastronomic tourism—using geographical data. |
| 4. | To analyse the impact of tourism destinations in different regions on regional development by evaluating them in terms of transport, infrastructure and tourist profile. |
| 5. | Developing an ethical and environmentally conscious approach to the conservation of natural and cultural heritage, the management of national parks and the principles of sustainable tourism. |
