The aim of this course is to provide an overview of the architecture and art of the Sumerian and Akkadian periods in Mesopotamia and to examine the spatial organisation, settlement patterns, and urban structure of the cities of the period.
The course examines the cultural and historical development of Mesopotamia on the basis of archaeological evidence. The course content includes the study of the pre-Sumerian cultures of Mesopotamia, the Late Uruk and Jemdet Nasr periods, the Early Dynastic I–II–III periods, the Akkadian Period, and the Third Dynasty of Ur, focusing on the artistic, architectural, and archaeological remains associated with these periods.
