Objectives of the Course

To examine and interpret the cultural structures of Mesopotamian civilizations (the Sumerians, Babylonians, and Assyrians) and Pre-Classical Anatolian cultures (the Hittites, Phrygians, Urartians, and Neo-Hittites) through their belief systems, mythologies, and legendary traditions in light of philological and archaeological evidence.

Course Content

Within the scope of Ancient Near Eastern mythology, the origins and influences of myths will be examined in the light of Mesopotamian and Anatolian sources; in this context, the mythologies, legends, and rituals of these cultures will be analysed.

1.Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the cultures, belief systems, and religious traditions of ancient Anatolian and Mesopotamian societies.
2.Analyze and interpret the myths, deities, and cosmological narratives of the Sumerian, Babylonian, and Assyrian civilizations.
3.Demonstrate knowledge of the cultural traditions, belief systems, and religious practices of ancient Anatolian societies.
4.Demonstrate knowledge of the mythological traditions of pre-Hittite Anatolian cultures.
5.Demonstrate knowledge of the mythological traditions of post-Hittite Anatolian cultures.
