Objectives of the Course

• To examine women’s position in social, economic and political life, • To examine the factors which determinate this position by looking at some main concepts such as patriarchy, patriarchal ideology, gender, gender based roles, gender based discrimination, • To examine historically the changes in women’s position particularly by looking at women’s movements and changes in social and economic conditions, • To examine and evaluate two main research areas in Women’s Studies (“Violence against Women” and “Women and Political Participation”) and some important studies in these areas.

Course Content

Historical Development; Evaluation of Researches on Women in Turkey and in the World; Feminism as a Term and Theory; Women’s Movement; Women’s Movement in Turkey; Women’s Political Participation; Women and Work, Discrimination, Division of Labour, Violence against Women.
