The main objective of this module is to examine and explain the socio-political dynamics of collective action. Social and political movements are the expressions of the collective actions which are in fact dependent variables of the social structure. From this perspective, students are expected to learn about women, environmental, anti nuclear, anti war, movements.
In this course we will focus on the social structure and collective action, theories of collective action, political culture and political structure, peace, environmentalist, student, women’s and civil rights movements. Also, ideologies, values and social movements, the emergence of new middle classes and new social movements, religious movements, identity and social action, globalization of social movements will be investigated.
| 1. | 1. New social movements have emerged in early 1970s and began to dominate politics in Western Europe. In this course, students expected to improve their grasp of social movement theories as well as learn the historical roots of them. |
| 2. | 2. In addition, the relationship between society and political movement will be considered. By using concepts, theories, approaches and tools of political sociology some of current new social movements will be analysed. |
| 3. | 3. The New Social Movements were an direct outcome of the rise of new middle classes in the 1950s and 1960s. |
