Objectives of the Course

To examine the relationship between macroscopic properties such as pressure, volume, temperature and specific heat, excluding the microscopic structure of substances; to understand the basic principles of thermodynamics

Course Content

Thermodynamic Equilibrium and Temperature, Temperature scales, Heat, Specific heat, Latent Heat, Thermal Expansion, Heat Conduction, Ideal Gas, Laws of Thermodynamics, Work done by a Gas, Internal Energy - First law of Thermodynamics, Applications of the First Law, Adiabatic Process, Kinetic Calculation of Pressure , Heat Engines, Gas engine-Otto cycle, Second Law of Thermodynamics-Carnot Cycle

Learning Outcomes
1.be able to define and explain thermodynamic concepts in detail.
2.be able to explain the concept of entropy and its applications in thermodynamic processes.
3.be able to explain the laws of thermodynamics and to apply them to physical systems.
4.be able to explain the kinetic theory of gases and apply it to an ideal gas.
5.be able to explain the working principles of heat engines.
6.can relate the acquired knowledge directly to technology and industry and demonstrate its application.
