Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to introduce problems of art and aesthetics by means of examining and comparing the theories of art and aesthetics,, and to exhibit different concepts of art of some main philosophers from past to today.

Course Content

Demarcating conceptual boundaries of art and aesthetics, we will compare different conceptions and theories of art and examine the relations between contemporary theories of art and aesthetics exhibing contemporary discussions of art and aesthetics.

Weekly Detailed Course Contents
Week 1 - Theoretical
Examining the subject matter of philosophy of art the following questions will be tackled: “What is Art?” “Who is the artist?” “What are the fundemental concepts of Art?”, Which questions are the fundemental questions of art?”
Week 2 - Theoretical
Examining the properties of an investigation into the meaning of aesthetics; scrutinizing the whatness of the aesthetics. Searching the answer of some questions: What is the Aesthetics? What is the aesthetical subject or aesthetical object? What kind of relationship is there between the Philosophy of Art and Aesthetics?
Week 3 - Theoretical
Discussion on the differences between the Philosophy of Art which investigates the whatness of art and Aesthetics which investigates of the concept of “beauty”. The relation between philosophy of art and aesthetics and their relations with other disciplines as science and history of art will be tackled.
Week 4 - Theoretical
Explaining and evaluating Plato’s account of art and its relations with the concept of “beauty”.
Week 5 - Theoretical
Explaining and evaluating the concepts of “mimesis” and “katharsis” in Plato.
Week 6 - Theoretical
Introducing and criticising the conception of art in Aristotle.
Week 7 - Theoretical
Introducing and evaluating the concepts of “mimesis” and “katharsis” in Aristotle.
Week 8 - Theoretical
Evaluating the meaning of art by means of conceptions of art of Plato and Aristotle and comparing these with other conceptions of art.
Week 9 - Theoretical
Explaining the concepts of imitation (mimesis), creation, game.
Week 10 - Theoretical
Comparing the concepts of art and techne.
Week 11 - Theoretical
Evaluating the relation of art with ethics, politics, moral, ideology, mythology. Examining the debates concerning art’s possibility without these concepts.
Week 12 - Theoretical
Introducing theories of art and aesthetics.
Week 13 - Theoretical
Introducing theories of art and aesthetics.
Week 14 - Theoretical
Discussion and re-evalution of the course content.
