Objectives of the Course

The main aim of this course is to enable the student to gain Turkish-English/English-Turkish translation skills, regarding material on topics such as idiomatic expressions, phrasal verbs, proverbs, formal and informal expressions and semantic variations. The course also enables the student to categorise different translation methodologies and to identify the syntactic and semantic difficulties that may be encountered during the translation of different texts, to recognise and correct translation mistakes, hence helping them acquiring sophisticated translation skills.

Course Content

In this course, in-class/at home translation is undertaken in the fields mentioned in the course objectives. The different translations of the same text are discussed and compared in terms of their textual and linguistic characteristics. Students' translation assignments are criticised and evaluated.
