The objective of this course is to provide the students with essential rhetorical skills to develop coherent, unified and logical arguments; to acquaint students with different types of essays; and to provide students with the basic tools required for the writing process.

| 1. | To be able to analyze writing situations (taking into account audience, purpose, content, form and style). |
| 2. | To be able to generate ideas using a variety of prewriting techniques. |
| 3. | To be able to decide upon an effective method of organizing and developing material for particular writing situation. |
| 4. | To be able to produce stand-alone paragraphs with a topic sentence and supporting details. |
| 5. | To be able to maintain unity and coherence within a single paragraph. |
| 6. | To be able to construct logical bridges between ideas at the sentence and paragraph level. |
| 7. | To be able to construct a logical outline using various methods (brainstorming, clustering, branching, looping, etc.) for producing an essay. |
| 8. | To be able to write well-organized essays (cause-effect, comparison-contrast, argumentative). |
| 9. | To be able to understand the principles of the writing process in its basic form: generating ideas, organizing ideas, drafting, revising and editing. |
