Objectives of the Course

The objective of this course is to provide the students with essential rhetorical skills to develop coherent, unified and logical arguments; to acquaint students with different types of essays; and to provide students with the basic tools required for the writing process.

1.To be able to analyze writing situations (taking into account audience, purpose, content, form and style).
2.To be able to generate ideas using a variety of prewriting techniques.
3.To be able to decide upon an effective method of organizing and developing material for particular writing situation.
4.To be able to produce stand-alone paragraphs with a topic sentence and supporting details.
5.To be able to maintain unity and coherence within a single paragraph.
6.To be able to construct logical bridges between ideas at the sentence and paragraph level.
7.To be able to construct a logical outline using various methods (brainstorming, clustering, branching, looping, etc.) for producing an essay.
8.To be able to write well-organized essays (cause-effect, comparison-contrast, argumentative).
9.To be able to understand the principles of the writing process in its basic form: generating ideas, organizing ideas, drafting, revising and editing.
