Objectives of the Course

The objective of this course is to develop students' academic writing skills through various essay types while raising awareness of ethical principles in academic writing. The course also encourages students to discuss contemporary ethical issues and express their ideas in written form.

Course Content

This course introduces the fundamentals of academic writing, including essay structure, thesis statements, and various essay types such as cause-effect essay, comparison-contrast essay, argumentative essay and response paper. It also addresses ethical issues in academic writing, including academic integrity, plagiarism, citation and referencing, as well as discussions on contemporary ethical issues.

1.To be able to identify the main components of the writing process such as controlling idea, topic sentence, paragraph and composition.
2.To be able to identify and use basic writing concepts such as support, unity, coherence and outline.
3.To be able to identify and write cause and effect and argumentative essays.
4.To be able to identify and write classification and reaction essays.
5.To be able to prepare an outline in line with the essay topic.
6.To be able to identify and analyze the main parts of an essay such as introduction, development and conclusion.
7.To be able to write different types of essays in line with various topics.
8.To be able to understand the principles of the writing process in its basic form: generating ideas, organizing ideas, drafting, revising and editing.
9.To be able to apply citation rules.
10.To be able to construct a logical outline using various methods (brainstorming, clustering, branching, looping, etc.) for producing an essay.
