Objectives of the Course

A detailed examination of the development of the eighteenth-century English novel through the works of writers such as Samuel Richardson, Henry Fielding, Laurence Sterne, and Tobias Smollett.

Course Content

The course begins by examining the emergence of the English novel as a new literary genre in the eighteenth century, highlighting the ways in which it differs from earlier literary forms. It then introduces the cultural, economic, and social factors that contributed to the development of the novel. The works of writers such as Samuel Richardson, Henry Fielding, Laurence Sterne, and Tobias Smollett are examined through selected scholarly articles and critical studies.

1.Identifiies the characteristics of formal realism that developed during the eighteenth century English literature and analyzes their manifestation in the major novels of the period.
2.Examines the social, historical, philosophical, and theoretical development of the novel in English literature through selected novels.
3.Identifies and interprets the major subgenres of the emerging novel, including the Gothic novel, the picaresque novel, and the epistolary novel.
4.Analyzes the use of social and political satire in novels in relation to the historical events and prominent figures of the period.
5.Analyzes the representation of the cultural and economic characteristics of the period in novels.
