Objectives of the Course

The aim of the course is to enable the student to acquire the knowledge, skills and competence required to recognise and interpret the origins and development of American drama, the dramatic movements in America from the 1900s to the present; to analyse the dramatic movements seen in America, to examine representative examples, and to develop a critical viewpoint.

Course Content

The origins and development of American drama, the dramatic movements in America from the 1900s to the present, prominent American playwrights and their works are identified, analysed, and discussed.

1.Ability to define the developments and changes in American drama during the first half of the twentieth century.
2.Ability to read and interpret texts within the political, cultural and economic context of the time during which they are written/staged.
3.Ability to compare and conrast plays written at different or the same periods of time.
4.Ability to observe basic American themes, cultural myths and concepts underlying the American identity in a variety of plays.
5.Ability to read, understand and interpret plays within the context of the multiple oppressions of race, gender and class.
