The aim of this course is to examine the economic structure, institutions, and policies of the Ottoman Empire from its founding through the establishment of the Republic within their historical context. The course analyzes the fundamental dynamics of the Ottoman economic system, its structure of production and trade, the fiscal system, the monetary system, industrialization efforts, foreign trade relations, and the process of integration into the world economy. The goal is to enable students to evaluate the Ottoman economic structure from a historical and institutional perspective.

Primary sources and methods in Ottoman economic history, The formation of the Ottoman economic system, land tenure and the timar system, agricultural production, the guild system, domestic and foreign trade, the fiscal and tax system, the monetary and financial structure, the capitulations, industrialization efforts, foreign borrowing, the Ottoman Empire’s integration into the world economy, economic crises, and the economic legacy passed on to the Republic are examined.
