Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to provide students with the ability to understand the relationship between economic structure and social and political developments by examining the transformations of the Turkish economy from the Ottoman Empire to the present in a historical context.

Course Content

The course begins with the Ottoman economic structure, covers the founding years of the Republic, the statist era, the years of planned development, the liberal transformation after 1980, and current economic developments. Students analyze the economic history of Turkey through key themes such as agriculture, industry, foreign trade, the financial system, and economic crises.

Learning Outcomes
1.Students will be able to define and explain the fundamental periods, policy choices and transformations in the economic structure of Turkey from the Ottoman Empire to the present.
2.Students will be able to analyze the historical context of economic institutions, policies, and crises.
3.Students will be able to compare economic policies (e.g., statism, planned development, liberalization) implemented in different periods.
4.Students will be able to evaluate the problems and dynamics of today's Turkish economy from a historical perspective.
5.Students will be able to critically discuss the role of internal and external dynamics in Turkey's economic development.
