This course aims to examine the political, theological, and jurisprudential aspects of the Islamic sects that emerged or were influential in the Andalusian Islamic civilization. Students will explore the causes of sectarian diversity in al-Andalus, the impact of these sects on its social and political structures, and the place of Western Islamic sectarian thought within the broader context of Islamic history. The course seeks to equip students with the ability to analyze the formation, development, and interaction of Islamic sects specifically within the Andalusian context.
The geography of Andalusia still attracts attention today in terms of the culture and civilization it has revealed throughout history. The brief political history of Andalusia, the sects that are influential in Andalusia will be discussed and their socio-cultural reflections will be evaluated.
