Objectives of the Course

Introducing the development of Islamic Law in the Ottoman Period.

Course Content

Basic characteristics of Ottoman Law, historical background, distinction between sharia law and customary law, fatwa and qada institutions

Learning Outcomes
1.Recognizes the legal literature of the Ottoman period.
2.Be able to recognize the basic concepts of law and legalization and establish the relationship between legalization and official madhab practice.
3.Learns the distinction between Sharia and customary law in Ottoman law.
4.Can compare customary criminal law in the Ottoman Empire with Islamic law in terms of compatibility.
5.Can analyze the Ottoman legalization experience and its effects on today.
