Objectives of the Course

To teach general and special examination techniques regarding diseases in different animal species To teach evaluation of various examination results for correct diagnosis, and to compare them within differential diagnosis

Course Content

This course covers the fundamental principles of clinical diagnosis in veterinary medicine, including history taking, animal restraint, and systematic clinical examination techniques. It addresses the examination of general health status, skin and mucous membranes, and the lymphatic, cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, urinary, and nervous systems, as well as the diagnostic use of laboratory, endoscopic, and imaging techniques.

Week 1 - Theoretical
General knowledge regarding clinical diagnosis, special references (disease, symptoms, diagnosis etc.)
Week 2 - Theoretical
Fixation of animals, General examination,methods (signalement, temperament, anamnesis, inspection, palpation)
Week 3 - Theoretical
General examination,methods (auscultation, percussion, catheterization, mensuration, smelling)
Week 4 - Theoretical
Specific medical examination techniques (microscopical exam, diagnostic operation, endoscopy, imaging diagnostic techniques, etc.)
Week 5 - Theoretical
Examination of general health status: temperature, diseases with fever.
Week 6 - Theoretical
Medical examination of lymphatic system, lymph nodes and lymphatic vessels.
Week 7 - Theoretical

Examination of the visible mucous membranes
Week 9 - Theoretical
Clinical examination of the skin condition, colour, moistness, smell and elasticity. Lesions of the skin: pruritis, swelling, edema, emphysema, tissue loss, wound, desquamation, inflammation (dermatitis)
Week 10 - Theoretical
Examination of cardiovascular system: pulsation, medical examination of heart (auscultation, percussion, ECG), hematological examination
Week 11 - Theoretical
Examination of respiratory system: medical examination of pharynx, larynx, trachea, lungs, pleural cavity
Week 12 - Theoretical
Examination of gastrointestinal system: chewing, salivation, swallowing, oral cavity and pharyngeal mucous membrane, oesophageal examination, rumination, vomiting, defecation,
Week 13 - Theoretical
Examination of rumen and abomasum, examination of intestines, examination of liver and spleen
Week 14 - Theoretical
Examination of urinary system: examination of urinary system organs, urine sampling, macroscopic, microscopic and chemical evaluation of urine, Examination of nervous system: control of reflexes, ataxia, cramp, paresis, and paralysis
