Objectives of the Course

To gain the knowledge intakes structure from the rivers by diversion weirs, and gated diversion weirs. To be able to design and construction of spillways, sluiceways, stilling basins and energy dissipation basins.

Design of side-wise water intake structures/Design of the diversion weir/ Design of the gated diversion weir/ Stilling basin/Energy dissipation basins/ Seepage controlling/ Hydraulics of Cross drainage structures/ Bridge and culvert hydraulics

General information about the design of hydraulic structures
Week 2 - Theoretical
Design of Side-Wise Water Intake Structures: Location of intake, sediment controlling, head losses along the intake structure,
Week 3 - Theoretical
Design of Diversion Weir: determination of the crest elevation of the spillway, determination of the spillway (weir) length and capacity
Week 4 - Theoretical
Hydraulic and static profile of spillway, application profile of the spillway.
Week 5 - Theoretical
Design of gated diversion weir
Week 6 - Theoretical
Types of gates, loads acting on gates, gates stability
Week 7 - Theoretical
Final checking of the projects of the diversion and the gated diversion weir.
Week 8 - Theoretical
Design of stilling basin
Week 9 - Theoretical
Design of the Energy Dissipation Basin: Hydraulic jump and the determination of the head losses

Seepage under the Diversion Weir: flow net under the foundation, seepage flow and pressure, seepage length.
