Objectives of the Course

The aims of this course are to learn the main learning theories in mathematics education and to practice which methods and techniques can be used in each content in elementary mathematics subjects.

Course Content

The aim and basic principles of teaching mathematics,background for teaching mathematics (in theworldand in Turkey),teaching and learning strategies in mathematics education,extention of elementary school mathematics programme: purpose and characteristics; theories of teaching and learning mathematics, measurement and evaluation in mathematics classes; problem solving strategies, Early number concept, natural numbers, teaching four operations in natural numbers (addition, subtruction, multiplication and division).

1.To be able to explain the main learning theories, theorists and their ideas basis to Mathematics Education
2.To be able to explain how kids learn mathematics and utilize the applications accordingly.
3.To be able to explain the development of pre counting concepts and early counting activities
4.To be able to utilize subject- specific measurement activities
5.To be able to apply mathematics into daily life
6.To be able to develop positive attitude towards mathematics learning
7.Carries out collaborative studies in mathematics teaching.

Important skills to gain in mathematics education . Five process standards 8problem solving, reasoning and proof, communication, cennections, representation)
Week 4 - Theoretical
The scope, purpose and properties of primary school mathematics curriculum. Mathematics teaching and learning strategies.
Week 5 - Theoretical
Teaching numbers and counting. Development of early number concepts and number sense (Pre number counting activities, one-to-one correspondence, cardinal rule, more, less, number sense and real world)
Week 6 - Theoretical
Whole number, place value development. Pre-Base ten concepts, basic idea of place value, models for place value.
Week 7 - Theoretical
Teaching the concepts of addition and subtraction. Strategies for addition facts, strategies for subtraction facts, students’ misconceptions and preventing children from misconceptions
Week 8 - Theoretical
Teaching the concept of shortness/longness / and related length measurement activities. Students’ misconceptions about length and preventing children from these misconceptions (Midterm)
Week 9 - Theoretical
Teaching the concepts of weighing and measuring activities. Students’ misconceptions about weighing and preventing children from these misconceptions
Week 10 - Theoretical
Teaching the concept Repeating pattern in mathematics. Types of pattern and activities ( Growing pattern, number pattern, pattern on the hundreths chart)
Week 11 - Theoretical
Teaching geometrical shapes and objects (Square, rectangle, triangle, circle, cube, prism, cylinder, cone and sphere). Some basic 2 D shapes and 3 D objects
Week 12 - Theoretical
Teaching the concept of addition and subtraction of natural numbers . Students’ misconceptions about multiplication and division and preventing children from these misconceptions
Week 13 - Theoretical
Teaching the concepts of table, objects and figure graphs . Reading tables, Classification and basic data analysis. Graphical representation.
Week 14 - Theoretical
Teaching the concept of multiplication and division of natural numbers . Students’ misconceptions about multiplication and division and preventing children from these misconceptions
