Objectives of the Course

This course is designed to provide students with an opportunity to pursue some subjects to greater depth such as, meaning of mathematics, history of mathematics education, problem solving in Mathematics, learning methods and theories in mathematics, teaching techniques and strategies in mathematics classrooms, testing and evaluation in mathematics.

Course Content

The aim and basic principles of teaching mathematics,background for teaching mathematics (in theworldand in Turkey),teaching and learning strategies in mathematics education,extention of elementary school mathematics programme: purpose and characteristics; theories of teaching and learning mathematics, measurement and evaluation in mathematics classes; problem solving strategies, Early number concept, natural numbers, teaching four operations in natural numbers (addition, subtruction, multiplication and division).

Week 1 - Theoretical
Teaching the concept of fractions. WHole, half and quarter part of fractions
Week 2 - Theoretical
Fractions, student misconceptions in fractions concept, other meanings of fractions, fraction models
Week 3 - Theoretical
Equity, comparing, sorting, addition and subtraction operations with fractions,
Week 4 - Theoretical
Decimal fractions, writing decimal numbers, comparing decimals
Week 5 - Theoretical
Angles and teaching angle concepts. Defining angles, naming angles, measuring angles and drawing angles activities
Week 6 - Theoretical
Development of geometrical thinking on a child. Teaching the concepts of Triangles, rectangles, and polygon Düzelt
Week 7 - Theoretical
Teaching the concepts of Geometrical objects, creating identical shapes through isometric papers and symmetry
Week 8 - Theoretical & Practice
Measurement and measuring, development of measuring idea. Teaching the concepts of perimeter and area(Mid-term Exam)
Week 9 - Theoretical
Teaching the concept of volüme and related activitesi. Teaching how to Measure liquids.

Measuring time, weighing and types of money used.
