Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to examine the historical development of democracy from Antiquity to the present through its political, social, and intellectual dimensions, enabling students to analyze the transformation of democratic institutions, values, and practices over time. The course explores the emergence and evolution of democratic thought as well as its implementation in different historical and geographical contexts. It aims to develop students’ abilities to evaluate democratization processes within their historical settings, compare different models of democracy, and critically assess contemporary democratic systems.

Course Content

This course examines the historical development of democracy from Ancient Greece to the present through its political, social, and intellectual dimensions. The course explores the emergence of the concept of democracy, the historical evolution of democratic institutions, and the transformation of key democratic values such as citizenship, representation, liberty, equality, and human rights. It also analyzes different models of democracy, processes of democratization, constitutional developments, political movements, and critiques of democracy across various historical periods and geographical contexts. The course aims to provide students with a theoretical understanding of the history of democracy, develop their ability to analyze historical processes comparatively, and interpret contemporary democratic systems within their historical contexts.
