Objectives of the Course

The primary objective of this course is to provide music teacher candidates with the skills to perform the school music repertoire by utilizing the technical and musical features of the electronic keyboard (rhythm, sound bank, auto-accompaniment, transposition, etc.), to use the instrument effectively as an educational tool in classroom activities, and to prepare accompanied materials for students.

Course Content

In this course, the fundamental structure and functions of the electronic keyboard will be introduced. It aims to familiarize students with the technical capabilities of the instrument and teach its practical application in school music practices. Activities will be conducted to appliedly utilize the acquired technical skills on a school music repertoire that aligns with the educational curriculum.

Weekly Detailed Course Contents
Week 1 - Theoretical
Introduction to the keyboard and general information on its structure. Panel control, sound banks (GM/GS standards), and connectivity ports (MIDI, USB).
Week 2 - Theoretical
'Single Finger' and 'Fingered' chord modes, Start/Stop and Synchro Start features. Basic cadence in the key of C Major (I-IV-V).
Week 3 - Theoretical
2/4 and 4/4 Western music rhythms (8 Beat, 16 Beat, March) and applications on school songs.
Week 4 - Theoretical
3/4 and 6/8 rhythms (Waltz, Slow Rock), articulation studies, and applications on school songs.
Week 5 - Theoretical
Selecting instruments appropriate to the character of the song. Utilization of 'Dual' (voice layering) and 'Split' (keyboard splitting) features. Applications on school songs.
Week 6 - Theoretical
Harmonic progressions in the keys of A minor and E minor. Musical utilization of Intro and Ending functions. Applications on school songs.
Week 7 - Theoretical
Harmonic progressions in the keys of E minor and D minor. Applications on school songs.
Week 8 - Theoretical
Rhythm equivalents on the keyboard and performance of 2, 4, 5, and 6-beat Turkish music meters (Nim Sofyan, Sofyan, Türk Aksağı). Applications on school songs. (MIDTERM EXAM)
Week 9 - Theoretical
7, 8, and 9-beat meters (usul), and applications on school songs.
Week 10 - Theoretical
Comparative teaching of the Western music sound system and the Turkish music sound system, and applications on sample school songs. Types of harmonic progressions in certain makam scales within the current repertoire of the Ministry of National Education (MEB). Applications on school songs.
Week 11 - Theoretical
Comparative teaching of the Western music sound system and the Turkish music sound system, and applications on sample school songs. Types of harmonic progressions in major makam scales within the current repertoire of the Ministry of National Education (MEB). Applications on school songs.
Week 12 - Theoretical
Pedagogical use of the 'Transpose' button (transposing to the student's vocal range) and performing examples of internal modulation (geçki) within a piece. Comparison of the 'Fixed-Do system' and 'Movable-Do system,' and the application of the movable-Do system on Turkish music notation.
Week 13 - Theoretical
Presentation of selected school songs by utilizing all functions (Intro, Accompaniment, Fill-in, Ending).
Week 14 - Theoretical
Presentation of selected school songs by utilizing all functions (Intro, Accompaniment, Fill-in, Ending).
