Objectives of the Course

Understand the impacts on traumatic events on survivors, family and friends

Course Content

What to expect after a traumatic event or disaster, Common reactions to stressful and traumatic events, Common physical reactions, Trauma and a sense of loss, Children’s reactions to death and loss, Post traumatic stress disorder in children, adolescents and adults, Therapeutic approaches to treating trauma, Assessment instruments and therapeutic techniques in post-traumatic counseling, School based interventions following a disaster Helping family members and friends, Legal/ethical issues related to trauma

1.Describe the definition, context and types of trauma.
2.Describe the reactions that can be seen in children, adolescents and adults after trauma.
3.Describe the outcomes (individual, familial and societal) of traumatic life events
4.Explain psychological trauma, the psychology of disaster, natural disasters and violence.
5.Describe the potential psychological disorders (posttraumatic stress disorder, acute stress disorder) that can be caused by trauma.
6. Describe the basic principles and approaches to prevent negative effects of trauma on humans.
7.Explains the basic methods people of related to post trauma counseling and how to approach traumatized people.
8.Defines the qualifications and competences of psychological counselors working with traumatized people.
9.Explains professional ethics and legal issues in crisis and crisis intervention processes.
