Objectives of the Course

The main aim of the course is to adapt the existing sociological knowledge to the field of health, which is a social institution, and to increase our ability to make sociological analysis. In this direction, it is aimed to address different sociological theories on health and disease. Starting from a critical point, it will be emphasized that the experience of the disease and even its treatment cannot be understood only with physical and biological approaches. In this context, the phenomena of health and illness will be analyzed and discussed in the context of capitalism, class and inequalities

Course Content

To be able to look at health and disease phenomena sociologically, • To summarize the development of health sociology, • To be able to compare biomedical and social models of health and disease, • To learn theoretical approaches to health and disease phenomena on a sociological basis, • To be able to list the main factors affecting health, • To be able to define the concept of patient role, • To be able to evaluate the issue of medicalization of daily life, • To be able to evaluate the relationship between economic policies and health, • To be able to list what health inequalities are at the social level, • To be able to comprehend health-related issues at macro and micro level, • To become aware of the discussions regarding the body, • Addressing the issue of health in the context of the risk community, • To be able to focus on bioethical debates,
