Objectives of the Course

This course aims to cover the entire process from the foundation of the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantium) to the conquest of Constantinople. The course aims to develop students' historical thinking and analysis skills by evaluating the political history, religious structure and cultural heritage of Eastern Rome, its relations with neighboring states (especially Turkish states) and its historical effects.

Course Content

This course covers the history of the Byzantine Empire, beginning with the declaration of Constantinople as the capital in 330 and ending with the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453. Byzantine administrative structure, religion-state relations, iconoclasm debates, Byzantine-Sasanian, Arab and Turkish relations, Byzantine social structure and heritage will be covered. There will also be a comprehensive analysis of the political and military advances of the early, middle and late Byzantine imperial periods.

Learning Outcomes
1.To be able to understand the founding process of Byzantium and analyze the basic dynamics that characterized the state.
2.To be able to learn the process of integration of Christianity into the Byzantine Empire and to discuss its impact on the political functioning of the state.
3.To be able to explain the European policy of the Byzantine Empire and its political-military relations here.
4.To be able to understand the Byzantine Empire's Eastern policy and its political and military relations with the Turkish-Islamic states.
5.To discuss the collapse of Byzantium and the conditions that led the state to this process.
6.To draw the boundaries of the Byzantine Empire in time and space and to discuss its cultural impact on the geographies it ruled.
