Objectives of the Course

This course deals with the political, religious, military and cultural aspects of the Crusades that started in 1095 and continued until 1291. In this course, it is aimed to develop students' ability to analyze historical events in multiple ways by evaluating the political and socio-economic situation in Europe before the Crusades, the reasons for the emergence of the crusades, the development and results of the crusades in terms of both Europe and the Turkish-Islamic world.

Course Content

It examines the political, religious, economic and cultural reasons for the organization of war for nearly two centuries from a historical perspective. The development of the campaigns is described in a chronological framework. The Latin states established in the Near East, their relations with Byzantium and the Turkish-Islamic world, the reasons for the emergence of military orders, especially the Templar, Hospitalier and Teutonic knights, and their activities in the region, the effects of the results of these campaigns on both Europe and the Turkish-Islamic world are evaluated.

Learning Outcomes
1.to be able to explain importance of the Crusades as one of the some important events of History of Humanity.
2.To be able to realize the fact that the Crusades was not a merely inter religions struggle in the light of the first hand sources.
3.To be able to explain the Crusades as a chain of events in which huge masses were mobilized with ideological motives which were camouflaged with religious mottos.
4.To be able to explain the political and military relations created by the Crusades in the Near East geography and to evaluate these relations in terms of local people and states in the region.
5.To be able to compare Western and Eastern sources about the Crusades in terms of plot and evaluate them from a critical point of view.
6.To be able to evaluate the Crusades in a comprehensive and objective way in terms of Turkish history and world history in terms of its results.
