Objectives of the Course

Following to an introduction to methodology and terminology peculiar to military history, teaching the phases that Ottoman military organization had experienced from the Early Period to Republic, treating the basic event and notions of the Modern Age European and Ottoman military history with their political, social, economical and intellectual aspects and in an interdisciplinary approach.

Course Content

Transition from the first military organizations of Ottoman Empire, yaya and müsellem units to janissary and qapıqulu systems and importance of this change, role of Timar system within the military structure, changes in the Ottoman military structure during the 17th and 18th centuries.

Learning Outcomes
1.Being able to learn primary paradigms in military history which is an auxilliary discipline of history.
2.Being able to learn historical and technical notions peculiar to military history.
3.Being able to understand military development that took place in the world and adaptation attempts of Ottoman Empire that were undertaken as a response to them.
4.Being able to learn wars and internal security maneuvers that Ottoman army had undertaken during the long XIX. century and socio-political and socio-economical costs of these operations.
5.Being able to understand philosophical and ideological position of warfare in the existence of humankind.
6.Being able to understand developments in the military field of Ottoman Empire and founding principles of Republic of Turkey.

First standing military units of the Ottoman Empire, Yaya and Müsellem corps.
Week 4 - Theoretical
Foundation of Janissary troops, conscription to Janissary troops. Devshirme and Penchik System.
Week 5 - Theoretical
Provincial military organization in the Ottoman Empire.
Week 6 - Theoretical
Logistic Units.
Week 7 - Theoretical
Cebeci, artillery and gun carriage units in the Ottoman army
Week 8 - Theoretical
Nizam-ı Cedit (New Order); Reformation movements in the Ottoman military system.
Week 9 - Theoretical
Janisarry Uprisings and abolishment of Janissary Troops; Vak'a-yı Hayriye
Week 10 - Theoretical
Military Reform; Nizam'ı Cedid (New Order) and Asakir-i Mansure-i Muhammediye (Victorious Soldiers of Mohammad).
Week 11 - Theoretical
Introduction of Compulsory Military Service in the Ottoman Empire.
Week 12 - Theoretical
Kur'a Law; Enforcement of this Law and encountered difficulties.

Foreign Military Missions in the Ottoman Empire and Technology Transfer (1826-1918).
