Objectives of the Course

The aim is to teach students the basic concepts of emergency and disaster management, types of disasters, risk reduction and response plans; to create awareness and a sense of responsibility towards disasters by equipping them with preparation, implementation and exercise skills at individual and institutional levels.

Course Content

This course teaches fundamental concepts of emergency and disaster management, types of disasters, risk reduction, and response plans. It also covers actions to be taken before, during, and after a disaster, shelter and humanitarian aid, basic fire and building safety, disaster kit preparation, emergency tools and equipment, communication, and teamwork. By combining theory and practice, the course aims to develop students' awareness and responsibility towards disasters.

5.Identifies personal risks within the scope of building safety, fire, and basic disaster knowledge.
6.Recognize the tools, materials, and equipment used in disasters and know the contents of a disaster kit.

Introduction to emergency and disaster management, basic concepts.
Week 2 - Theoretical
Types of disasters, the reality of disasters in Türkiye, and an introduction to the AFAD volunteer system.
Week 3 - Theoretical
Disasters from the past to the present: case analysis (1999, 2023, etc.)
Week 4 - Theoretical
Key problems and consequences of emergencies and disasters, psychosocial effects.
Week 5 - Theoretical
Actions to be taken before, during, and after an emergency or disaster.
Week 6 - Theoretical
Emergency and disaster leadership, teamwork, and support staff activities.
Week 7 - Theoretical
Basic life support in disasters
Week 8 - Theoretical
Risk reduction and response planning (IRAP, TAMP) and university and dormitory emergency plans.
Week 9 - Theoretical

Emergency and disaster shelter, humanitarian aid training, and ethical guidelines.
