Objectives of the Course

• To explain and discuss gender and patriarchal system as two important elements which shape the lives and status of men and women • To discuss social construction of gender • To analyse the operation of patriarchal system within the social structure • To investigate gender inequalities from different feminist perspectives

Course Content

The Concepts of Sex and Gender; The Social Construction of Masculinity and Femininity; The Process of Socialisation and its effects on Gender Construction; Gender in Language and Literature; Power and Violence; Gender, Class, Race, Ethnicity; Gender Inequalities.

1.1. Be able to understand and discuss the process of social construction of gender
2.2. Be able to analyse the operation of patriarchal ideology in this process
3.3. Knowing feminist theories and different approaches towards men and women’s status within the society as a whole
4.4. Be aware of gender inequalities.
5.5. Be able to understand and discuss the relationship between violence, power and hegemonic masculinity from a feminist perspective
