Objectives of the Course

To provide the theoretical research background necessary to examine mass communication processes and media contents through scientific methods; to convey quantitative and qualitative research designs, data collection, and analysis techniques through literature examples.

Course Content

Basic principles of scientific research processes, epistemological approaches in media studies, formulating research questions and hypotheses, sampling methods, and the theoretical framework of traditional and digital research methods such as content analysis, discourse analysis, surveys, interviews, and focus groups.

Using academic databases, classifying primary and secondary sources, citation styles.

Sampling logic in quantitative and qualitative research, probability and non-probability sampling types.

Boundaries of the positivist approach, the role of correlational and experimental research in mass communication.
Week 6 - Theoretical
Principles of quantitative content analysis, categorization, creating a coding sheet, and reliability analyses.
Week 7 - Theoretical
Measuring media consumption habits, questionnaire design rules, and theoretical analysis of scale types.

Interpretive approaches, in-depth interview technique, and unstructured interviews.

Focus group method in media reception research, the role of the moderator, and analysis of group dynamics.
