Objectives of the Course

The aim of the course is to give information to the students about the formation process of modern Turkish society, social structure, social changes and transformations starting from the 19th century.

Course Content

This course will firstly examine the processes of westernization and modernization that began in the Ottoman Empire. Secondly the basis of the social structure at that time will be discussed. Furthermore, factors that constitute the society such as economic policies, population structure, immigration, urbanization, family structure, educational policy, etc. will be emphasized on this course.

3.Analyzes the economic, cultural, and demographic elements shaping Turkey’s social structure.
4.Discusses the effects of internal and external migration processes and gender issues on social structure.
5.Interprets the democratization process and the problems of democratization in Turkey from a sociological perspective.
