Objectives of the Course

To enable students to develop sensitivity towards social issues, to provide the skills to carry out voluntary activities in cooperation with non-governmental organizations and local communities, and to support them in producing communication projects focused on social benefit.

Course Content

Theoretical framework of the concepts of civil society, volunteerism, and social responsiveness; global and local issue areas such as disadvantaged groups, environment, migration, and human rights; structure of non-governmental organizations (NGOs); design, budgeting, and management of social responsibility projects; ethical principles and communication strategies in fieldwork; active volunteering applications in the field and reporting these processes.

Weekly Detailed Course Contents
Week 1 - Theoretical & Practice
Concepts of volunteerism and social responsiveness: Introductory theoretical definitions and historical process. Mapping social issue areas of student interest through in-class discussion.
Week 2 - Theoretical & Practice
Civil society and non-governmental organizations (NGOs): Structure, operational models, and the role of NGOs in social movements. Examination of large-scale NGO models in Turkey and worldwide through case studies.
Week 3 - Theoretical & Practice
Social responsibility project design: Developing a project idea, target audience analysis, stakeholder identification, and risk management. Preliminary study to identify NGOs or communities for cooperation.
Week 4 - Theoretical & Practice
Project management and fundraising: Time planning (Gantt chart), budgeting, funding sources, and volunteer management. Preparing a draft project proposal text for the identified social issue.
Week 5 - Theoretical & Practice
Ethics and communication in fieldwork: Protection of personal data in voluntary activities, the principle of doing no harm, and crisis management. Obtaining official approvals from the partner institution and finalizing the field schedule.

Week 7 - Theoretical & Practice
Field applications I: Launching the first field volunteering activity within the designated NGO, school, nursing home, or environmental association. Data collection and observation processes from the field.
Week 8 - Theoretical & Practice
Field applications II: Continuing volunteer activities in coordination with institutional staff and the target audience. Identifying operational challenges encountered in the field.
Week 9 - Theoretical & Practice
Evaluation of the first two weeks in the field in a classroom environment within the theoretical framework. Revision of the field plan using problem-solving approaches.
Week 10 - Theoretical & Practice
Field applications III: Deepening institutional or field-based activities aligned with the sustainability phase of the project. Conducting applied communication work in front of the community.
Week 11 - Theoretical & Practice
Field applications IV: Executing the final group activities in the planned volunteering schedule. Collecting qualitative feedback (interviews/surveys) from the target audience.
Week 12 - Theoretical & Practice
Making social responsiveness projects visible, digital campaign design, and rights-based journalism language. Creating a social media campaign content draft based on field data.
Week 13 - Theoretical & Practice
Classification of qualitative/quantitative outputs obtained from the field, activity report writing techniques. Converting all collected field data and visual materials into an academic report format.
Week 14 - Theoretical & Practice
Presentation of the volunteering activities and final reports carried out throughout the semester before the class. Collective evaluation of projects based on social impact and sustainability criteria.
