Objectives of the Course

The objective of this course is to provide students with the theoretical background and practical skills required to practice journalism in digital and networked environments. It aims to develop competence in data gathering, multimedia content production, digital verification, and new media ethics.

Course Content

This course covers the digital transformation of traditional journalistic practices and the impact of the internet and mobile technologies on journalism. It examines news narrative types incorporating hypertextuality, interactivity, and multimedia elements. The core scope includes the use of content management systems (CMS), search engine optimization (SEO) focused writing, an introduction to data journalism, social media journalism, and rights-based journalism projects for digital platforms.

Network society, historical development of internet journalism, and core concepts. Structural comparative analysis of traditional and new media news sites.

Online reader behavior, stretching the inverted pyramid technique, headlines, and lead writing. Short news writing practice for digital platforms.
Week 3 - Theoretical & Practice
Using links within news, attribution, and creating in-depth reading channels. Designing in-text link networks exercise.
Week 4 - Theoretical & Practice
Keyword analysis, search engine algorithm rules, and the clickbait trap. Optimization practice of SEO-friendly news headlines and texts.
Week 5 - Theoretical & Practice
Integration of text, audio, video, and graphic elements. Designing a draft multimedia news plan combining different media elements.
Week 6 - Theoretical & Practice
News gathering with smartphones, shooting techniques, and fast editing principles. Interview shooting and audio recording practice via smartphone.
Week 7 - Theoretical & Practice
Using mobile video editing applications, adding subtitles, and adapting to social media formats. Editing the captured interview on a mobile device to prepare it for publishing.
Week 8 - Theoretical & Practice
Utilizing Twitter (X), Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube platforms for journalism, "Story" and "Reels" reporting. Real-time news feed and thread creation practice.
Week 9 - Theoretical & Practice
Open data sources, data mining, and data scraping processes. Extracting newsworthy data from datasets of official statistical institutions exercise.
Week 10 - Theoretical & Practice
Basic chart types, mapping, and the use of infographic tools. Transforming extracted datasets into news texts by visualizing them with online tools.
Week 11 - Theoretical & Practice
Citizen journalism, crowdsourcing, and verification techniques. Verification practice of a news report obtained from social media using fact-checking tools.
Week 12 - Theoretical & Practice
Rights violations, clickbait, misinformation, and AI-generated fake content. Investigation of digital ethical violation samples through case study method.
Week 13 - Theoretical & Practice
Creative Commons licenses, news plagiarism, and digital journalist safety. Searching for open-licensed materials and using secure communication tools.
Week 14 - Theoretical & Practice
Publishing the content produced throughout the semester on personal digital platforms/blogs. Editorial evaluation and feedback of the portfolios.
