Objectives of the Course

To examine the historical development of the Turkish media system from the Ottoman Empire to the present through political, economic, legal, and social turning points, enabling students to analyze the contemporary media structure from a historical perspective.

Course Content

First Turkish newspapers in the Ottoman Empire, institutionalization of censorship, the press boom of the Constitutional Era, the press during the National Struggle, press policies of the Early Republic, the transition to a multi-party system and press laws, the impact of political developments between 1960-1980 on the media, post-1980 corporatization, the monopolistic era, the emergence of private radio-television broadcasting, and the digitization process.
