Objectives of the Course

To provide knowledge about the cellular basis of biological systems, structures and functions of biological molecules, cell structure and organelles. It also covers DNA replication, transcription and RNA processing, translation, and post-translational modifications. The aim is to make this knowledge applicable in the field of Dentistry.

Course Content

Medical Biology covers the structure of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, cell membrane structure and function, cellular organelles, nucleus and chromatin structure, cell cycle control, cell division, central dogma, structure and functions of DNA and RNA, protein synthesis, protein trafficking, and intercellular communication.

Name of Lecturer(s)
Prof. Ali ÖZMEN
Prof. Mehtap KILIÇ EREN
Learning Outcomes
1.Understands the basic characteristics and building blocks of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and their potential use in dentistry.
2.Recognizes cell organelles and diseases related to them, and can relate them to molecular genetic mechanisms
3.Explains the cell cycle, its control, and types of cell division with molecular mechanisms. Understands the mechanisms of cell death and aging.
4.Understands the organization of eukaryotic genomes, explains DNA structure and replication, RNA structure and transcription, and knows protein synthesis and post-translational modifications with their molecular mechanisms, recognizing their importance for health.
5.Knows intercellular connections and communication, their significance and functions, and relates them to human health
