Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to provide knowledge about neurological and psychiatric disorders that may be encountered in dental practice, explain their relationship with oral and dental health, and teach a multidisciplinary approach to patient management and treatment.

Course Content

Stroke (ischemic and hemorrhagic), transient ischemic attacks, and cerebral vascular malformations. In dentistry, anticoagulant therapy, oral hygiene problems after stroke, and the risk of aspiration are emphasized. Types of epilepsy, the oral side effects of antiepileptic drugs (such as phenytoin, valproic acid, etc.), seizure management during dental procedures, and prophylactic strategies are discussed. Classification of consciousness states (confusion, somnolence, stupor, coma). During dental procedures, management of loss of consciousness and syncope, as well as emergency protocols, are taught. The pathophysiology, clinical features, and effects on dental treatment of conditions such as trigeminal neuralgia, postherpetic neuralgia, burning mouth syndrome, and diabetic polyneuropathy are addressed. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), bruxism, insomnia, and hypersomnia. The use of intraoral appliances in sleep apnea and the dental effects of bruxism are discussed. Orofacial manifestations of myasthenia gravis, muscular dystrophies, and other neuromuscular disorders, pre-dental treatment evaluation, and treatment protocols are explained. Migraine, tension-type headaches, temporomandibular joint disorders, and atypical facial pain. Differential diagnosis and treatment approaches for dental and non-dental causes of pain are taught.
