Objectives of the Course

To know the major literary genres in Turkish literature, to determine the general characteristics of literary genres on the text.

Course Content

What is Nazım? What is prose? What are the main types of verse and prose? Classification of Turkish literature. Analysis of verse and prose genres in parallel with the development line of Turkish literature.

1.To know and use terms and concepts related to literature with their definitions and to relate them with other terms and concepts.
2.To know the important theories about literature, to be able to benefit from them while analyzing the texts.
3.Classification of Turkish literature.
4.Showing various examples of verse and prose genres on examples from different periods of Turkish literature.
5.To follow the development of species in periods.

Week 1 - Theoretical
The aim of the course, the importance, content, the main sources to be used and books to be read.
Week 2 - Theoretical
What is Nazım? What is prose? What are the main types of verse and prose? What are the general characteristics of poetry? What are the major forms of verse? What are the types and rhyme types used?
Week 3 - Theoretical
Classification of Turkish literature. Demonstration of prosody meter, rhyme form, some mazmuns and literary arts in an ode of old Turkish literature.
Week 4 - Theoretical
Poetry in Tanzimat literature.
Week 5 - Theoretical
Poetry in Servet-i Fünun literature.
Week 6 - Theoretical
Poetry in the Republican Period.
Week 7 - Theoretical
What is a novel? Main elements: Narrator, hero, time, space, language and stylistic features.
Week 8 - Theoretical
Novel in Tanzimat literature.(Midterm exam)
Week 9 - Theoretical
Novel in Tanzimat literature.
Week 10 - Theoretical
Novel in Servet-i Fünun literature.
Week 11 - Theoretical
Novel in Republican literature.
