Objectives of the Course

Comprehend the discipline of linguistics with its fundamental constituents and assumptions, understand the concept of Language as a system of sign and analyze its basic components.

Course Content

A short history, basic assumptions, basic questionsand problems of linguistics; modern approaches towards linguistics; signs and sign systems; language as a system; basic properties of human language; components of linguistics (phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics).

Language and communication, origin of languages, sign languages, artificial languages
Week 3 - Theoretical
Language universals

Phonetics, acoustics and phonetics, speech organs, phonemes, vowel, consonant, form and place of speech
Week 5 - Theoretical
Sound samples, affinity, dissimilarity, parts above, emphasis and melody.

Morphology, dependent and independent morpheme, gravitational and derivation morphemes, morphological analysis
Week 7 - Theoretical
Morphological language typing, morphological phonological variability
